Cats are natural scratchers. Scratching helps cats keep their claws in good condition by removing the outer layer of the claw, and it also helps to stretch and exercise their muscles.
Scratching posts provide a designated place (that is not your beloved furniture) to scratch. This one is covered with sisal rope, and optionally has a prickly base that your cat can rub up against to itch.
