Surprisingly, these are one of the most effective - and cost-effective - filtration methods for any aquarium. Since surface area and flow are the two most important factors in establishing biological filtration, you couldn't possibly get a simpler solution to both!
Basically, install these (to the size of your tank) and cover with gravel (not sand), attach airheads or an internal filter pump to create flow, and you basically have turned your entire substrate into a large filter!
